The car is powered by the 2.4 litre inline four-cylinder OM616 engine. It is diesel-fueled and matched up to a three-speed automatic transmission sending the power to the rear wheels. It can be heard in the video preceding the photo gallery. Horsepower rating from the factory was 62 HP at 4,000 RPM, torque was rated at 97 lb.-ft. at 2,400 RPM. At 3,000 pounds, this car can get itself around. But these engines were never about power; they are about durability and reliability. In fact, the OM616 is still in production under M-B licence by Force Motors of India where it is being installed in Force SUVs.
The Magnolia finish on the car retains a nice shine and is a striking presence, consistent with its indoor storage past. The W123 features round headlights side-by-side with the more inboard fog lights. Rear light lenses are ribbed to ensure some of the lens still lights up when driving through snow or heavy dirt. A sunroof is equipped. This Benz also features the iconic 14-inch Bundt wheels, skinned in 205/70 Grand Prix brand tires. The seller is also including a spare set of steel OEM wheels with M-B covers as well as three spare M-B covers. All badging and antenna are intact, making this a presentable package.
Inside the MB-Tex is known to be as durable as the powerplant. Many will appreciate the period Blaupunkt AM/FM radio – analog with six presets. A look at the photo gallery reveals that the dash remains uncracked. Instrumentation beyond the four-spoke steering wheel consists of a clock, a 160 km/h speedometer with odometer within as well as a third gauge housing fuel level, oil pressure and temperature. The aforementioned odometer reads just under 175,000 km but without extensive records on the car, the owner is selling this Benz with TMU – true mileage unknown. The car is equipped with cruise control.
Current owner has been its caretaker since October 2020. Hagerty pegs these at between $7,100 for fair condition and $48,000 for concours. Its quote on the car is “a thoroughly mature mid-range car combining the latest engineering with tried and tested design features” – again, not about flash-and-dash; more like bulletproof reliability. But this car will get the looks, just from the combo of age and condition. It is a unique time capsule.
