Today, we feature a 1978 Volkswagen Super Beetle Convertible on the west coast.  Owner has had it 29 years and it has been treated to a restoration with a nod to originality.

.

With origins in Germany, Volkswagen translates to “the people’s car”.  At one time, it enjoyed the distinction of being the best-selling car of all time.  (Toyota’s Corolla has surpassed it and now holds title to that crown.)  Beetle followers are among the most loyal in the car world.  Among the reasons is its simplicity – an air-cooled engine, rear-drive and a spartan cabin remained hallmarks of the original Beetle.  While it also has a following, the New Beetle crowd is different – its car was first released in the 1998 model year.  The car is different, too – water-cooled, front-drive and creature comforts in-cabin – and it was built on a Golf platform, the replacement for the Beetle no less.

This car has been repainted in white.  It presents well, though the overcast BC sky makes a good look tricky.  It remains true to original form in other exterior features – 4-1/2” steel wheels, chrome appointments and original style lighting.  The trim is said to be refreshed as well, with newer bumpers.  The top, a replacement, completes the triple-white finish.  The windshield is also new, along with the running boards and various weather seals.

The interior in white presents cleanly.  Seat foam has been replaced as has the vinyl upholstery.  The famed Wolfsburg logo presents prominently on the steering wheel and the wood-grain dash trim contrasting with the primarily white inside makes the interior pop.  No tachometer, no power windows, no heated seats – this original Beetle is not trying to be anything it is not.  We do notice a map pocket on the passenger door so perhaps this ’78 was ahead of its time.

Don’t count on the flat-four 1.6 litre engine to win you any races but this car’s refreshed unit presents as very clean.  Paired with a 4-speed manual sending the juice to the rear wheels, the combination of the sound of an air-cooled powerplant makes for fun and nostalgic motoring.  Other recent mechanical work includes suspension and brakes.

Find this 1978 Volkswagen Super Beetle Convertible on Craigslist in Langley for $35,000.  Our thanks to CCC follower Richie for sending it in to us.
