No Reserve – 1984 Jaguar XJ6 Sovereign Saloon Project

Here we have a 1984 Jaguar XJ6 Sovereign Saloon, being offered at NO RESERVE It is a Series III XJ6 and has been owned by the same custodian for some 20+ years but has not been driven regularly in approximately three or four years.  The owner is now unable to drive and the sale is being handled by his wife and a long-time family friend.  It has mostly been parked on the seller’s driveway during that time in order that his wife’s car and the 1975 Triumph TR6 we sold last auction week could he stored in his garage.  This Sovereign has been described as a project because it needs work, which we have attempted to describe in the listing and display in the photo gallery.  This year of XJ6 is the body style which preceded the XJ40 body style of XJ6 released for the 1986 model year.  However, this Series III-traditional design remained so popular that the Jag brain trust opted to continue selling it through the 1992 model year in 12-cylinder form, making two styles of XJ available between ’86 and ’92.  While various changes were implemented from the Series I and Series II cars, its design is not a big departure from the original Series I which went to market for model year 1969.

The exterior of this XJ6 was painted Sage Green Thermoplastic (Jaguar code HEG) at the factory and has been repainted and since touched up in various places under the current ownership.  Some rust repair has been carried out on an “as-needed” basis, though there are further instances of surface rust – please review the gallery.  The car is well-equipped, including a glass sunroof and original emblems are intact, the glass is all marked XXX Triplex, familiar to most Jaguar enthusiasts.  Lights are also functional and intact, a centre brake light has been retrofitted, we note a minor crack in the lens of the fender light on the driver’s side.  Chromed dual exhaust outlets retain their elegance and Jaguar 15” x 6” OEM alloy wheels are also presentable.  Wheels currently wear 215/75 winter tires with little use, the car includes a set of Goodyear Integrity 215/70R15 all-season tires in nylon carry bags.

The interior code of this saloon is Jaguar AEE, which decodes as Doeskin.  The car is long on Connolly leather and wood veneer on the inside, most in good condition save for a seam tear on the driver’s seat.  The car retains an original Jaguar AM/FM/cassette and three of four power windows are functional  (passenger’s side rear would not operate on photo day).  The XJ6’s instrumentation includes a speedometer with incorporated odometer as well as a tachometer beyond the stately two-spoke steering wheel, they are flanked by oil pressure and voltmeter to the left, with fuel gauge and water temperature to the right.  In the centre, there is a trip computer mounted above the stereo head unit.  Equipped with two gas tanks, there is a button just below to switch drawing fuel from one take to the other.  The car was originally equipped with air conditioning, though it has not been tested.  The trunk contains a spare tire mounted on a non-matching 15” Jaguar alloy wheel, tool roll with jack kit is also on hand.

This Jaguar is equipped with a 4.2 litre straight-six-cylinder engine, the six-figure mechanical odometer indicates 115,000 km.  Factory ratings were 205 horsepower at 5000 RPM and 231 lb.-ft of torque at 3000 RPM while fuel injection is by a Bosch L-Jetronic system.  Mated to the powerplant is a three-speed automatic transmission by Borg-Warner, drive wheels are in the rear.  Those reviewing the videos will note that booster cables are connected to the battery for the start-up, battery does not hold a charge.  When the cables were connected, the engine started and idled easily.  Brakes are a four-wheel disc system and will also need attention, fluid is low and the car can not currently be driven safely.  Hood insulation is torn, rust is visible on the undercarriage.  Extensive service records come with the car, some are photographed in the gallery.  Noteworthy services include an alternator replacement in 2019 and a transmission replacement in 2018, both under 5,000 km ago. There are also a couple of appraisals on hand, the most recent being dated 2007 for a value of $10,000 – again few km since – as well as the seller’s bill of sale from purchase in September 2000.

My current owner is unable to continue driving me. I must find a new home. If you appreciate style & beauty and not phased by taking on a project I may be what you are looking for. With some effort and a little TLC I could be yours. Are you the one? I can be available to any prospective buyer. Mike
