NO RESERVE – 1991 Toyota Corolla SR5

This 1991 Toyota Corolla departs from the routine four-door sedan in that it is an SR5 model.  It is a two-door coupe with pop-up headlights, a sure sign of sportiness in its day.  It showcased the reliability and practicality of the sedate Corolla sedan while harkening to the Celica and Supra of the day on account of the body style and headlights.  The car is in Montreal and will be sold to the highest bidder on Collector Car Canada at No Reserve.  It has travelled 176,000 km.

The car is powered by a 1.6 litre four-cylinder engine powering the front wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission with overdrive.  The engine employs a dual overhead cam and 16 valves and generated 102 horsepower when new.  Engaging the overdrive is a straightforward task by engaging a button located in the gear shift where the driver’s thumb naturally rests while handling the shifter.  While seventh-generation Corollas were manufactured at two plants in North American, notably in Cambridge, Ontario, this unit was assembled in Japan.

Red paint shows a bright shine.  The car has had many rust treatments, as corroborated by the rustproofing stickers on the inside of the driver’s door – this is shown in the gallery, which also include a paint meter reading taken by the seller.  The red is contrasted by moulded rub strips and black bumpers, supplemented by an air dam up front.  Both front and rear bumper covers show a chrome accent.  In addition to the popup headlights, the rear trunk lid spoiler contributes to the sporty appearance.  Aftermarket wheel covers over steel wheels and shod in new factory-sized 175/70R13 tires complete exterior look.

Inside, the instrumentation also hints at sportiness, with a tachometer to the left of the speedometer and of equal size.  The pod also furnishes a fuel gauge and temperature gauge.  Seller has provided photos of a clean dash.  Grey velour seats, common and well-loved on period Toyota and Honda products, are clean – with shoulder belts up front and lap belts in the rear.  Also featured are a digital clock and an aftermarket AM/FM/CD head unit.  Toyota speakers, branded on the rear deck, remain in place and the antenna is found above the A-pillar, able to be manually raised and lowered from the driver’s seat.

Seller has provided underside photos.  They are as expected for a rustproofing-treated car, rust is limited to some signs of surface corrosion only.  Seller also notes a spot of surface rust on the driver’s side front fender.  The lined trunk houses a compact-sized spare tire and gives off a clean appearance when lining is pulled back.

Further inclusions in this auction are the original Owner’s Manual and two keys.
