1996 Alfa Romeo 916 Spider 5-speed manual convertible
Here is a 1996 Alfa Romeo 916 Spider 5-speed manual convertible, built in Italy and styled by Pininfarina, that was originally sold new in Japan, then imported into British Columbia in 2012. Documents setting out the importation process are included in the gallery and the car has been registered in Ontario since the seller’s purchase the same year. Seller has added approximately 42,000 km since his purchase, more concentrated on the front-half of his ownership tenure. The car has been well-treated – with many service, maintenance and parts invoices also included in the gallery, notably a clutch, front brakes – pads and rotors – and rear brake service in the past 12,000 km. The car has also seen fair weather duty only, with one possible exception. It has been driven to Florida once, the journey south was in late March and Florida-sourced service records dated April are in the gallery; otherwise, it was stored in a heated warehouse for all but the last two winters, during which time it was housed in the attached garage of the owner’s home. Ontario buyers will be interested to know that the car was safetied in November 2021, about 40 km have been driven since. This Standards Safety Certificate is included in the gallery.

Silver paint is believed original and maintains a good shine – bodyshell is galvanized with plastic liners in the wheel arches, making it rustproof. Seller has always kept the car garaged and acknowledges minor road chips on the front end; he advises no collisions or paint work during his custodianship. The headlight arrangement of the 916 is a unique feature and the lights surround the trademark triangular Alfa Romeo grille. The 916 was released for the 1995 model year and its design won many awards, an incomplete list is included further on in the listing. This example does have the factory optional 17” wheels, they are skinned in Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 V-rated tires installed approximately 30,000 km ago, in 2013. Wheels do exhibit some curb rash. The manual convertible top is in good condition, water-tight and treated to a new vinyl window in 2017 that retains the clarity for which it was procured. The optional removable wind deflector remains with the car and is in good condition – its retaining pins have been upgraded to aluminum, a touch suggesting constant care by the owner as also seen by the smaller bits he purchased for the car over the years, see photos. Glass is good and has been treated to a light tint, the windshield was replaced during the seller’s ownership. Driver door travel is unobstructed but its check has a minor click in its open/close path – see video.
The interior has been well-kept and also reflects great care in ownership. Both leather seats embroidered with the Alfa Romeo crest show wear almost commensurate with age, though the driver’s seat shows a very small seam split, pictured. Instrument cluster is both businesslike and true to its Italian design, exhibiting panache – the branded stainless steel shift knob as a centrepiece. Though he used it only sparingly while he owned the car because most of its service was top-down, owner tested the air conditioner and found that the compressor engaged, though the system blew only lukewarm to cool air. The head unit was replaced when the car came to Canada because the original, made for Japan, received a range of frequencies not used in North America. Owner relays that this Sony head unit is functional, he adds that the connection of the removable faceplate can be finicky. In the clean trunk is found the original space-saver spare tire with jack and tools.
Under the hood is found the 2.0 litre inline-four Euro1 engine, which produced 148 horsepower at 6200 RPM coming out of the factory. It is a 16V powerplant, four valves per cylinder, the twin-spark engraving on the engine and badging on the trunk lid refers to the two spark plugs per cylinder set-up. The five-speed manual transfers the power and 137 lb.-ft. of torque (achieved at 4000 RPM) to the front wheels. Front brakes and clutch were changed at or around 142,000 km in 2014, brakes remain strong and stop the car evenly – see work orders in the gallery for this and other items like the Michelin Pilots and rear brake service. Seller is including a service manual saved to a USB drive as well as all documentation relating to the car. Underneath, the car does show light surface rust but the overall picture is consistent with fair weather duty only. Seller advises that next on his maintenance list would be a new battery, a radio without removable face plate and hood struts. We would suggest that any hesitation heard in the cold start video is attributable to the battery. Antenna is working and can be raised/lowered manually, the power functionality is non-operational.
In addition to the service records and service manuals, on delivery the trunk will contain some spares as photographed – wiper blades, light sockets and bulbs, belt, interior trim as well as switches. The paint brush in this group of photos has been used to apply “Leatherique” to the seats, which will also be included with the “Prestine Clean” with which this product is sold. This 1996 Alfa Romeo 916 Spider 5-speed manual convertible is available from the 10-year owner in Markham, Ontario.

Hello everyone and welcome to the auction for my 1996 Alfa Romeo, which I have enjoyed over the past ten years. It has been used sparingly the last few summers so it is time for a new caretaker.
