1974 Porsche 911S Targa 5-speed manual Soft-window & Long Hood conversion Resto-mod Outlaw

With Reserve

Here we have a 1974 Porsche 911 Targa 5-speed manual, available in Waterloo, Ontario, which has been modified to include a soft rear window – a relatively rare feature available on 911 Targas from 1967 through 1969 – and converted to be a “long-hood”, the way 911s were produced through 1973.  Front bumper standards mandated for the 1974 model year compelled Porsche to redesign the front end of the 911, one of the results being that the hood did not extend as far to the front of the car as through 1973.  This car has been backdated to be a tribute to a 1969 model car, including the long hood and last year of soft window availability.  It maintains its original 1974 powertrain with numbers-matching 2.7L engine.

This 911 has been in the hands of the current owner approximately eight years, having purchased it out of Alberta from the previous owner who bought in Europe.  This air-cooled 911 is the beneficiary of an extensive restoration, freshly concluded.  The car has not been driven other than test mileage since completion.  The owner of the car is also the owner of a well-known Porsche parts supplier mostly specializing in 911 from 1965 through the 997 body style and lived in Germany for much of the air-cooled 911’s run.

In terms of the restoration, every bushing and bearing has been replaced.  The engine and transmission have been rebuilt.  Steel quarter panels with flares in the style of a 1969 911 were installed in advance of a high-end professional refinish in slate grey.  Interior carpets have been replaced.  Original front seats have been replaced by 1974 Recaro sport seats.  Braking has been upgraded by a brake booster and 1984-1989 3.2 Carrera hardware, with thicker rotors and bigger pistons.  A Dansk dual outlet stainless muffler has been installed.  The engine rebuild process consisted of replacement of rings, bearings, cam, valves and rod bearings.  The preceding is an incomplete report of the upgrades, more details follow.

The engine rebuild process included replacement of rings, bearings, cam, pistons, valves and rod bearings.  Cams are OEM for a 911E.  Carrera RS flat top pistons by Mahle have been installed.  The carburetors have been re-jetted and re-bushed.  The car has not been dyno’d but the seller expects the engine rebuild and the components that went into it should be good for a surge of approximately 20 horsepower from the factory rating of 175 HP, interesting power for a car in the 2,200-pound range.

The slate grey paint appears as it is, brand new without any driving time.  The stainless steel Targa roll bar possesses an equally perfect or near-perfect finish with correct Targa badging on each side.  The conversion to the soft rear window is brand new, its Velcro free of lint and its zipper moving snugly and freely.  The badge on the hood is grey and black, not OEM, adding to the resto-mod look of this car and matching the paint.  The chrome sugar scoop headlight surrounds leave nothing to be desired and the Euro ambers on the rear are a sharp accoutrement.  A Carrera stripe kit, uninstalled, comes with the car.  Its grey colour matches the grey portion of the wheels.

The car’s stance is at the European ride height, pavement-to-fender is approximately 25 inches.  There is a photo to illustrate in the gallery.  Refinished Fuchs wheels are 16”x6” in front and 16”x7” in the rear.  They are shod in new, never-used Continental Extreme Contact tires, 205/55ZR16 91W in front, 225/55/ZR16 95W out back.  Attention to detail is in evidence from front – with front underside rings to at once accommodate tow hooks and afford protection against bottoming out – to back, with the polished dual exhaust tips.

Inside, the Recaro front seats add to the appeal of the modifications while original rear seats remain.  A prominent interior feature is the Gilles Villeneuve (#27) three-spoke sport steering wheel; a matching Gilles Villeneuve key chain is also included.  New carpets are in place and the dash is the original 1974 dash without any cracking.  On picture day, there was no radio installed; the owner considers this a personal preference item, though he will offer a radio of choice from his current inventory to the new owner.

Other items added in the build include the front-mounted oil cooler – plumbing can be seen below the rocker on the passenger side; fibreglass bumper covers, front and rear (seals are OEM); OEM Porsche fuel pump; carburetor as used in the ’69 – ’73 911; Targa panel; and, of course, the soft-window, which fits snugly.  Also included in the sale is a second Targa panel, made of fibreglass and colour-matched.
