The owner attests to the reputation this “Slash 7 ‘Airhead’” has as a supreme tourer, made for Autobahn cruising. The 980 cc engine supplied 70 horsepower at 7250 RPM when new, plenty to move this bike around with its 507 lb. curb weight. Torque was rated at 56 lb.-ft. when new, achieved at 5500 RPM. The engine layout is an eight-valve two-cylinder Boxer “flat twin” and it is air-cooled. Camshaft is sub-cylinders, valves are OHV. The power gets to the rear wheel through a 5-speed manual transmission.
Braking is handled by twin cross-drilled discs up front and a single cross-drilled rotor in the rear. Tires mounted on the cast aluminum “snowflake” wheels are Metzeler Lasertec. Front tire measures 3.25 x 19 while that in the back is 4 x 18. Fore suspension is handled by twin telescopic forks and twin shocks with swingarm set up, aft. Instrumentation is typical BMW efficient. The analog clock continues to run, the second hand can be heard ticking when the motorcycle is parked.
These BMW R100s were so well-loved that when BMW Motorrad decided to make the move to water-cooled engines in the K75 and K100 from these air-cooled models, there was protest from customers and dealers. Not only were there protests, the company was forced to resume production in response to this market demand. The BMW R100s on offer when production resumed offered less power and were unable to regain the same popularity of the original line.
So, in summary, here we offer a recently serviced classic sport touring bike with low mileage up for bids in Waterloo, Ontario.
