1986 Porsche 944 5-speed manual

Here we have a 1986 Porsche 944 5-speed manual.  The 944 underwent a re-style in mid-1985 so this 1986 enjoys all of the benefits.  The key element is modernization of the look of the dash compared to the original up until the changes in 1985.5.  Other new features were updated door cards, a radio antenna embedded into the windshield and mechanical updates underneath relating to suspension and a larger gas tank.  This 944 boasts near perfect balance front-to-rear, with 50.7% of the weight is in the front.

This example is finished in Kalahari Beige Metallic (LA1Y), complemented by a rich brown interior.  The front seats are the esteemed Porsche sport seats, bolstered in brown vinyl with Porsche script inserts.  It began service as an Alberta car and moved on to Saskatchewan in 2018.  It stayed in the prairies until the seller’s purchase at which time it moved on to Ontario.  In the past five years, seller estimates that it has been driven approximately 55,000 km.

The powerplant of this 944 is a 2.5L inline four-cylinder engine good for 161 horsepower when new.  It could power the rear wheels through the five-speed manual transaxle to 60 mph in 8.3 seconds.  A key maintenance item under hood on these cars is the timing belt.  This car’s TB and balance shaft belt were changed June 2020, at 202,000 km.  Parts invoice is in the gallery.

The exterior remains in nice condition, the normal stone chips up front as well as a small dent in the driver’s side quarter panel, as seen in the gallery.  The 16” phone dial Porsche OEM wheels are an upgrade, the car was delivered to its first owner on 15” wheels, set out on the decal inside the fuel door – as seen in the gallery.  These wheels were refinished in 2020 and remain in beautiful condition – no marks show on the faces of the wheels.  They are skinned in a new staggered set of Continental Extreme Contact W-rated tires, date-coded late 2020 and installed May 2021.  The tires were installed at 206591 km, May 21, 2021.  They are 205/55 up front and 225/50 in the rear.

Inside, the brown sport seats match up with a brown interior.  The four-spoke steering wheel is representative of the era for Porsche, derivatives thereof were also installed in the 911 and 928.  Factory radio is in place, a Blaupunkt Monterey model with cassette deck.  Clock works, odometer works, trip odometer works – these have known to bring on challenge with the 944.  Another challenge is the dash and this one does show some cracking, evident in some gallery photos but minor enough to not appear in others.  The shift knob is upgraded to a premium item by MOMO.  An OEM shifter, boot and knob are included, should the next owner want to swap them in.  Steering wheel rim, shift boot and shift knob are all finished in brown leather.  Rear seat folds down to accommodate loads of cargo.  The cargo cover still retracts as designed, all the better to preclude temptation for the bad guys.

Option codes as on the photographed sticker are:

C36 – Bumpers with impact absorbers, America
G46 – placeholder
158 – Cassette-radio Blaupunkt Monterey SQR 23
288 – Headlight washers
533 – Anti-theft device
659 – Detachable roof panel, electrically openable

Peeling back the carpet in the hatch reveals how clean the car is.  The spare tire and rim appear unused, there is a complete tool kit on hand

Recent maintenance includes the timing belt, the Continentals and the wheel refinish.  A new windshield was installed and seat repair completed in 2020.  Clutch was changed in 2016 – same for plugs, rotor and distributor cap.

The Carfax in the gallery is clean – no damage or thefts and continuous registration in Alberta through 2018.  This is a lien-free car.

@CCA-Dave – good eye, I actually owned the car before I noticed it and it appears that I don’t think of it enough to have mentioned to @collectorcarcanada. That said, you know that I am not familiar with the nature of the odd look as you describe it but I am guessing silicone. What I can report is that it is water-tight. Thanks for the question, happy to answer more as they come in.

Hmmm…very tempting, since I still miss my old 944. Left rear tail-light photo, the seal looks a little odd? Was this a leaking tail-light, fixed with body-shop “dum-dum” or has it had a tube of silicone run around it?

Hi Everyone. I am the seller, thanks for checking out my auction.
The car is in fantastic shape and wants to go, go, go when it is rowed through the gears – the engine just loves to rev.
The only thing I can think of that does not work as designed by the factory is the fader for the stereo. When I bought the car, it had an aftermarket head unit and I had the OEM Blaupunkt – which was still with the car – reinstalled. Though the installer overlooked this control, both front and rear speakers function normally and I’d imagine the fader can be reconnected if the new owner wanted.
