85K km 1988 Mazda RX-7 GX 5-speed manual, 32-year owner

With Reserve

Here is a low-mileage 1988 Mazda RX-7 GX 5-speed manual which has been cared for by the same owner for 32 years, since 1989, when purchased as a trade-in from a franchise Mazda dealer with under 20,000 km; bill of sale for seller’s purchase appears in the photo gallery.  The current owner has dutifully maintained this vehicle since purchase, including when it was put back on the road as a spousal birthday present in 2014 after long-term storage.  Shop work orders for that recommissioning and other various services are viewable in the photo gallery.  The six-digit odometer shows just under 85,000 km and the car sports its original paint.  Videos appearing just before the gallery include engine running, a walk around and a demonstration of the cassette player and power sunroof, both still functional.

When the second-generation RX-7 FC body appeared for the 1986 model year, it was considered a breakthrough in exterior design.  It came to market with a cleaner design than its FB predecessor with a lower- and wider-looking stance.  Accolades included an award as Motor Trend’s Import Car of the Year in ’86.  The requisite period pop-up headlights were also a feature and it remains a desirable car today, based on Mazda loyalty and the cult following its rotary engines enjoy.

An appraisal by a certified appraiser was carried out in August 2021.  While we are not including his appraised value in the listing, excerpts of the appraiser’s comments have been included in the photo gallery to give an impartial sense of condition.  Among other things, the report mentions the dry engine bay with minimal seepage; no winters or corrosion – inside or out; reference to a past report by the same appraiser; paint in very good condition with very good lustre; and excellent condition of all trim and body accessories.  As well, appraiser notes that the engine starts easily and runs well.  The sunroof is water-tight, free of leaks.

The grey exterior of this RX-7 is complemented by a burgundy interior – cloth seats and matching carpets.  The car has been kept in stock form without modification.  The phone dial alloy wheels remain in good condition and are skinned in Michelin tires installed during the 2014 recommissioning, meaning they have rolled approximately 5,000 km.  These Michelin Defenders measure 185/70R14, the stock size.  The wheels are four-lug, with anodized nuts.

Other exterior features of the car include a dual exhaust, fog lights and a sunroof.  Light lenses are clear and free of any cracking.  The seller had the car professionally detailed just before Labour Day.

Inside, this is a true sports car – with two seats.  The sunroof is power-operated and its emergency handle – for use if power-operation is not functional – remains on hand and with the car.  The double-DIN factory AM/FM/cassette player remains with the car and is fully functional.  Instrumentation in orange-on-black beyond the three-spoke steering wheel includes a voltmeter, fuel gauge, temperature gauge and oil pressure gauge in addition to the conspicuously centre-mounted tachometer and speedometer to its right, complemented by clock and power locks.  Burgundy cloth-covered bucket seats are appointed with generous bolsters for support, promising a no-nonsense driving position.  There are lockable storage compartments behind each of the buckets and an original owner’s manual is included.

The rotary engine was known internally at Mazda as a 13B, with a displacement of 1.3 litres.  It was good for 146 horsepower when new, a nice figure for a car of approximately 2,700 pounds.

At the time of the 2014 recommissioning, 5,000 km ago, a fuel system service was performed – fuel pump, fuel filter and even a new fuel tank.  At this time, a new battery was installed.  At this same point, other typical post-long-term storage refreshes were carried out – the cooling system was flushed, carbon cleaning of the fuel system, brake fluid flush, transmission fluid change, power steering fluid flush and fill.  Other required maintenance was performed as well.  A new oil pressure switch was installed, required mouldings were updated and the power antenna was replaced.  At the request of his insurer, the seller had the car pass an Ontario safety check.

Since that time, other service has included replacing drive belts, oil service, various preventive inspections – these at 82,000 km.  As well, at 83,000 km, a new clutch was installed.  At that same time brake fluid flex hoses were replaced along with the engine air filter and resurfacing of the flywheel.

Flaws in the exterior include a key mark in the hood and light patina on the roof.  Both are pictured in the gallery.  Seller decided not to patch over these in order to keep the car original and it presents as an honest example.  Neither slows down the looks the car gets when out and about.

As mentioned by the appraiser, this car is rust and corrosion-free – reflective of the care paid it by the 32-year owner.  Photos of the underside are included in the gallery.

Collector Car Canada is proud to bring this clean example to market, not to be missed.  It is available from the long-time owner in Ottawa, Ontario.

Hello Everyone. I am the seller. The car is accurately described, starts easily and runs smoothly. It is with mixed feelings that I am selling after such a long tenure of ownership filled with fun memories but I just don’t have the opportunity to drive this RX-7 and it deserves to be driven and should be enjoyed. I am on standby for any questions you have about the car, in the Comments or via the Contact Seller button. Good luck, bidders.

Looks like a nice clean ride well worth bidding on. If you search around there are a few of these available but no where near the condition this one is in. Time to get a ride to drive and to show.
