1973 Pontiac LeMans GT Sport Coupe

This 1973 Pontiac LeMans GT Sport Coupe comes from the first year of the LeMans moving to the successful Colonnade body style, becoming more streamlined and sporty from the prior year and proving a big seller.  It was a time of transition in the automotive industry, given the oil crisis with the resultant increase in gas prices and the beginning of 5 MPH bumpers.  Yet, Pontiac still found a way to provide a sporty coupe with good looks and good performance despite these external constraints.  The LeMans provided Pontiac with a mid-sized option for those after some performance at a time when choices were becoming fewer and further between.

The outside of this car is well-kept, showing a few understandable badges of honour in the form of paint chips up front below the grille.  The Mesa Tan exterior is a re-paint in the factory colour, accented by correct GT decals as well as to-die-for in the day vertical-louvered opera windows.  The GT stripes provide contrast on the tan exterior, waking it up in a period colour combination.  The 350 badge above the Pontiac badge on the grille provides a hint at what lurks underneath, a throaty V8 from GM’s performance division, supported by Sport Coupe badges aft of the front wheel arches.  The trademark Pontiac wheels harken to other Pontiac Motor Division products, including the Firebird.  They measure 14” and are skinned in BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires with raised white lettering, P235/60 at all four corners – beefy and wearing good remaining tread.  The scuffs below the grille have been mentioned, another minor flaw is in the form of a paint blemish on the trunk lid, where a sticker has been removed.  Chrome on the bumpers is in nice condition and a fitting match with the grille.

Inside, this car has also been well preserved.  Tan vinyl seats are free of fault – no tears or rips are noted, even the stitching remains in place in all spots.  The Sport Coupe badging also appears on the door cards above arm rests, a step above the base LeMans.  Locks and windows are manual, there is a remote mechanical controller for the driver’s side exterior mirror.  Bucket seats with console and floor shifter also speak to this being beyond the base offering.  Three spoke steering wheel fronts a 120 MPH speedometer to the right, on which km/h equivalent decals have been applied – available at almost any Canadian gas station in the late ‘70s.  There is a centrally-mounted fuel gauge and on the left is a faux gauge housing warning lights for oil, water and amperage; within the latter is an analog clock though it is non-functional.  A period push button memory AM/FM/cassette head unit is in place.  There is a defogger for the rear glass, control is on the imitation wood-paneled dashboard.  There are seat belts for five, given the bench in the rear, the front occupants can opt for a shoulder strap or leave it stowed above the door windows.  The familiar “Body by Fisher” badge appears in the door jambs, consistent with almost any GM product of the time.

Under the hood, this Sport Coupe’s original 350 c.i. Pontiac V8 has been treated to some upgrades.  There is a Pontiac 350-branded air cleaner installed, providing a centrally-mounted chrome look.  A four-barrel Holley carburetor is charged with delivering the fuel while valve covers by Edelbrock also hint at performance.  The dual exhaust outlets confirm it, they sound great at idle or with an open throttle.  This is a power steering and power brake car, the powered master cylinder mounted to the firewall.  Engine components show normal wear, not excessive, the spark plug wires supple and flexible.  The three-speed Turbo Hydramatic 350 automatic transmission delivers power to the rear wheels.  Easy on that gas pedal or the Goodriches are liable to chirp.  Body and paint remain good, as does the underneath – a Ziebart sticker remains in place as evidence of care in this department.  In this condition, it is no surprise that this coupe brought a $27,000 value in its most recent appraisal.  Much in the way of originals for replaced parts will be in the trunk for the new owner.  There is also a full-sized spare mounted in the trunk.
