1957 Buick Super Riviera Hardtop Model 53 – Restored

Here is a restored 1957 Buick Super Riviera Hardtop four-door sedan with its original 364 cubic inch V8.  The seller inherited the car after an exterior refurbishment in 2006-2007 and it has been stored indoors since that time when not out for fair weather pleasure cruises.  The seller has included a 2019 appraisal which  reports the car to be in very good condition.  While noted as intended only for the owner’s use, the appraisal is included in the gallery.

The exterior was refinished in its original sea foam and cream during the refurbishment.  The appraisal reports that all doors fit and close well with no rust, glass is reported as excellent.  Roof and fender undersides are captioned as dent- and rust-free.  The original 15-inch steel wheels wear Buick covers and are skinned in Dayton 235/65 whitewall tires reported on the appraisal as 10% worn, with little use since.  Seller estimates 1600 km since the restoration.  To attest, they are shown in the gallery.  The 2006 sea foam and cream paint job presents well, given careful limited use and indoor storage while the brightwork is good with limited pitting of chrome noted.  Seller reports three small chips in the paint.  Four portholes accent the front fenders, an esteemed Buick feature of the day, as the chevrons do the rear doors.  The generous trunk is equipped with a full-sized spare tire.

The interior of the car remains all but original, from seat upholstery to the carpets.  Instrumentation consists of a horizontal speedometer with sweeping needle, other gauges are above it.  Going from driver’s side to passenger’s side from there, the heater and fan controls, Buick-labelled AM/FM/Cassette radio and analog clock are integrated into the dashboard; there are two speakers for the head unit, the clock is not functional.  All lights and electrical components are functional.  Seat upholstery is original in matching blue Cordaveen with nylon edging.  The carpets were noted by the appraiser as imperfect, mostly needing cleaning, they are protected by a vinyl mat extending along most of the floor up front.  The dashboard is two-tone with a stainless steel-look insert and a large lockable glove box.  The headliner is in place, though imperfect.  The seller is including a new, uninstalled headliner with the car.  Further appointments on the Super include a trip odometer, lamps in the trunk and glove box and dual sunshades.

Under the hood, the big and powerful 364 c.i. V8 starts, runs and idles easily – as shown in the video – and with a four-barrel carburetor, was good for 300 stock horsepower.  The original two-speed automatic is in place and sends power to the rear wheels, with the original differential still mounted.  Both the engine compartment and undercarriage are very good for the age of the vehicle – not that of a new car but quite nice for a classic cruiser.  The exhaust system underneath looks near new, with only light surface rust appearing in the remainder of the underside.  Recent mechanical work includes replacement of master cylinder spring and a seal on the drivetrain.
