1970 Ford Mustang Convertible with Original 302 V8
Here is a 1970 Ford Mustang Convertible which has been treated to extensive refurbishment over the years, generally done with a level of respect for how the car was produced in December 1969 at the Dearborn plant. The Mustang retains its original 302 cubic-inch V8 engine which has been bored out .040” over following a pair of engine rebuilds. The 302 is connected to the original three-speed automatic C4 Cruise-O-Matic transmission, which has also been treated to a rebuild – soon after the seller’s acquisition in 2007. The car has been refinished twice and wears a 2010 Ford colour by PPG, Bright Gold Metallic. The original colour was the 1970 Ford version of Bright Gold Metallic (Ford #3340-A) – though there is a slight difference between the two, the modern version chosen by the owner. The car is topped by a white soft top, power-operated with a good condition and clear vinyl window, over a Ginger Spectrum Cloth and Corinthian Vinyl interior – the front seat inserts have been replaced by a pattern similar to the original still in place on the rear bench. Ontario buyers, please note: this car comes with an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate.

Complementing the excellent repaint are chrome rocker guards and good chrome throughout. Other exterior treatments include an upgrade to 15” Magnum 500 wheels and the original 14” set also comes with the car, the latter skinned in almost unused whitewalls which came with the car at the time of the owner’s purchase. The owner bought from a Florida owner while the car was originally delivered by a dealer in Los Angeles, California – Midway Ford. Coincidentally, the Florida owner whose passing made the car available to the owner was a retired Ford dealer, from Mississauga, so its delivery to the current owner – there is a photo of it on the transport truck on delivery day – was a homecoming of sorts. Many other original details appear in the Marti Report appearing in the photo gallery. The dual exhaust features chromed exits and although the original parade boot to cover the lowered top is included, fitting it into place can be difficult. There are two paint flaws shown in our gallery with a coin for perspective, while chrome exterior door handles show some pitting. The car was hit from behind in 2024, though it suffered no paint damage. The rear bumper and its supports were replaced – meaning fresh bumper chrome – while the original bumper, photographed in the gallery, will accompany the car.
The upgraded 15” Magnum 500 wheels are lined in a set of BFGoodrich Radial T/A’s sporting raised white lettering and measuring 235/60 at all four corners; underneath are front disc and rear drum brakes. Date codes on the tires of 2017 and 2018 were observed on photo day. The tires were installed in June 2018 and were noted as possessing 90% of original tread on an appraisal for $45,500 dated 2022; it is also included in the gallery. The car has had light, continuous use over the Mustang club member current owner’s 18 years of ownership, with approximately 20,000 miles added. Owner shared that a replacement odometer showing 31,800 miles was installed to replace a faulty odometer reading just under 79,000 miles (photo in gallery). With the current reading under 57,000 miles, he estimates that mileage from new is approximately 104,000 miles.
The optional Luxury Bucket seats and rear bench are a cloth/vinyl combo, Corinthian vinyl bolsters with contrasting cloth inserts. There is a split along the inside seam in the passenger’s seat bottom, matching fabric will come with the car should the new owner wish to replace it; alternately, the original Ginger Spectrum Cloth is available commercially should the new owner prefer to match the original Ginger Spectrum Cloth still on the rear bench. The two spoke original steering wheel shows a Mustang emblem in the centre and it fronts instrumentation including a centrally-mounted 120 MPH speedometer and combo gauge for fuel level and coolant temperature. On the outsides are smaller gauges: voltage on the left and oil pressure on the right. The dash wears a colour-matched cap while knobs below are for lights, wipers/washers and a cigar lighter. Door cards are covered in vinyl and simulated woodgrain with some cracking noted on the driver’s side. Side windows are crank-style and move freely. This Mustang was optioned with factory air conditioning and the air blows cold. Audio has been upgraded with a vintage look USA-430 AM/FM head unit (receipt in the gallery) making use of the car’s original radio knobs, with a fan-equipped amplifier and CD changer mounted in the trunk. Recent floor mats with embroidered Mustang logo match the original carpets and there is an aftermarket Velcro-attached centre console with cup holders.
The rebuilt 302 c.i. engine has been bored out .040” over and starts easily – please see our cold start video, which also features exhaust sound at idle. It also can be heard under load in our driving videos. There is a mild cam while the engine compartment is dressed up with aftermarket valve covers and a chrome Edelbrock air cleaner, the factory part for the latter comes with the car. The 3-Speed C4 Cruise-O-Matic sends power to the rear wheels, the two-barrel’s factory rating was 220 horsepower. In addition to the high quality repaint, the car has been treated to extensive mechanical work, even beyond the 2023 engine rebuild with bore-out, heads polished/ported and hardening of valve seats. Recent further highlights beyond seasonal maintenance include: 2023 – front struts, power steering control valve, front springs and seats, speedometer cable; 2022 – brakes (pads, rotors, calipers, booster, wheel cylinders, pressure valve, lines, master cylinder). There are two binders’ worth of records for the car, primarily service records but also including original 1970 Mustang brochure and the aforementioned Marti report. Also important for Ontario buyers: the car comes with a current Ontario Safety Standards Certificate. A rubber piece on the driver’s side where the hood sits is missing in the gallery, the owner has the piece and it will go with the car.
This 1970 Ford Mustang Convertible with Original 302 V8 is available with original brochure, owner’s manual, maintenance records, Marti report, stock air cleaner, stock wheels with covers and tires, two sets of keys, unused reproduction replacement labels, two car covers, original rear bumper, parade boot, from the 18-year owner in Hamilton, Ontario.
