1980 Fiat 124 Spider 2000 5-Speed Manual Convertible

Here is a 1980 Fiat 124 Spider 2000 5-Speed Manual Convertible which is powered by a 2.0 litre inline four-cylinder engine complemented by a five-speed manual transmission sending power to the rear wheels. It is finished in blue over a matching blue interior. Wheels are by FIAT and measure 14 inches, each with a conspicuous “MADE IN ITALY” inscription. This 124 has a four-wheel disc brake system and comes with a new soft top – it was found in the trunk in our car review video; seller pledges to have it installed for the new owner; there is also a boot to cover the soft top when in the down position. For Ontario buyers: the car will be delivered with an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate.

This blue-on-blue Fiat was designed by Pininfarina and sports the emblem of the fabled design house for of each rear wheel well. Beyond a major service in 2010 which could be called a mechanical restoration, the car has had recent work under the ownership of the seller: timing belt, water pump, spark plugs and wires, upgraded exhaust, wiper motor as well as a carburetor adjustment. While the 1980 model year did see fuel injection systems for the model, this 124 is carbureted, with a 2-barrel carb – consistent with its date of manufacture, 9/79 as on the door jamb information plate, given that Fiat went to fuel injection mid-model year. There are blemishes on the body as detailed in the gallery. The seller is including colour-matched touch-up paint.

The 14” 8-spoke alloy wheels with FIAT-branded centre caps have had tires mounted and balanced since the photos in our gallery were taken. The now-installed tires are shown in the gallery just after the photos of the wheels, Motomaster SE 185/70R14 at all four corners. Underneath, the car was equipped with independent front suspension with a sway bar and coil springs.

The blue vinyl on the inside is matched by that on the door cards and in colour by the fabric portion of the floor mats, which are reinforced by black vinyl under-foot. The dash face shows a wood appearance accented by a Pininfarina Spider 2000 emblem while the black vinyl dash cap is intact without flaw. The map light fore of the five-speed shifter is functional and the owner has just installed a period-correct AM/FM/cassette head unit branded Optimus by Radio Shack.

Instrumentation is by Veglia Borletti. There is a 220 km/h speedometer and the adjacent tachometer maxes out at 8000 RPM with a 6000 RPM red line. The odometer within the speedometer shows under 20,000 km – this car is being sold with TMU – true mileage unknown; there is also a trip odometer. Smaller gauges found beyond the three-spoke FIAT-branded steering wheel are for fuel level and coolant temperature, complemented by a still-functional analog clock. In the centre stack are dials for wiper controls and dash back-lighting.

The 2.0 litre inline-four was factory rated at 80 horsepower and 100 lb.-ft of torque, a nice combination considering the 2385 curb weight. A five-speed manual with a worn wooden shift knob sends power to the rear wheels. The owner is of the mind that the upgraded exhaust delivers increased power, though a Dyno test has not been performed. He notes that an oil change was performed in Summer 2024.
