20 years owned 2003 Ford Mustang Cobra SVT Convertible 6-Speed Manual

Here is a Mustang that stands apart from most of the other fourth generation SN95 Mustangs, a 2003 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Convertible with 6-speed manual.

After a one-year hiatus, the Cobra returned to Ford’s lineup for the 2003 model year and offered a supercharger for the first time in Mustang history, then already a past of almost 40 years.  This powerplant supplied 390 horsepower (6000 RPM) and 390 lb.-ft. of torque (3500 RPM), and Mustang aficionados approved of the work of Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT).  It is important to note, though, that the car being offered has had some goodies installed – all easily removable/reversible with original parts included – that ensures it surpasses those figures.  Of over 150,000 Mustangs produced for the 2003 model year, 5082 were COBRA Convertibles – of these, a mere 414 were finished in Redfire Clearcoat Metallic worldwide.

This Cobra convertible was finished at the factory in Redfire Clearcoat Metallic (Ford code G2).  There are several appointments on the exterior to denote that it is a Cobra and different from other 2003 Mustangs.  The five-spoke 17” chrome wheels are finished with SVT centre caps, “COBRA” is embossed on the rear bumper – this car with added polished stainless-steel Inserts, just above which is an SVT emblem, fenders are emblazoned with Cobra badges, special trunk lid spoiler with integrated LED third brake light are just a few of the Cobra features.  As well, the smooth front spoiler is equipped with ducts to allow air flow for brake cooling and the rear bumper cover extends lower with openings for exhaust pipes on both sides.  Please note that the Cobra in the grille is an aftermarket bolt-on part, the original Mustang logo piece is included in the sale.  The hood venting allows for heat dispersal, there are Cobra-dedicated smooth rocker mouldings and foldable exterior mirrors are colour matched to the Cobras.  The car wears Nitto Motivo performance tires installed in July 2020, measuring 275/40 all around, allowing for tire rotations, and speed-rated W.  The car comes with a tonneau cover for when the top is down, photographed stowed in the trunk.

The interior presents in Dark Charcoal with Graphite Accents, this Cobra SVT is equipped with a/c.  This car is very well-appointed, illustrating that it is the top of the heap for Mustang for its year.  Accessories are power operated:  windows, remote locks, 6-way driver’s seat, top.  The cloth convertible top is equipped with rear glass defrost, the original Mach 460 premium AM/FM stereo with 6-compact disc, clock and sub-woofer sound system remains in place, the “460” denoting the 460-watt peak power and appearing on an emblem mounted on tweeters inside of the side mirrors.  Note that CDs are not currently being ejected.  Bolstered front seats have suede inserts with Cobra logos embroidered therein, the rears are also suede-appointed.  Also differentiating this Cobra SVT from other Mustangs of the day are the white-faced gauges showing an SVT logo with 260 km/h speedometer, 8000 RPM tachometer and 6500 RPM redline.  Cruise control is operated by buttons mounted on the leather-wrapped COBRA steering wheel.  Aluminum pedals are rubber-textured and complemented by a large dead pedal to the left.  Other upgrades are the interior styling bar, window tint and sequential taillights.

A look under the hood of this Cobra SVT tells of its well-kept condition.  The supercharged 32V “Terminator” 4.6L is now pushing 457 HP and 461 ft.-lb. of torque – please see the bulleted list of upgraded parts installed which amplify a cast iron block possessing aluminum heads, forged-steel crankshaft, Manley ‘H-Beam’ connecting rods, ARP bolts and Roots-type Eaton supercharger; all removed original parts are included with the car.  There is also a Dyno report in the gallery from soon after the performance parts were installed – see image 188.  The six-speed manual transmission sends the power to the rear wheels.  Traction control is on offer, it can be powered off with a console button at the driver’s option.

Most recent maintenance on the car is a lube. oil and filter change and a coolant flush-and-fill.  Other recent maintenance consists of a four-wheel alignment at 106,000 km, new battery at 105,000 km, rebuild of the differential at 79,000 km and replacement of transmission, pressure plate assembly and release bearing at 66,000 km.  Owner has retained all work orders and has them on hand.  The clean Carfax appears in the gallery – the current owner leased the car originally, so technically Ford Leasing owned it before he purchased it at lease-end.  The odometer question is attributed to careless clerical error, given that the Cobra SVT is equipped with a six-digit digital odometer.

This 19-years-owned 2003 Ford Mustang Cobra SVT Convertible 6-speed manual is available with owner’s manual, window sticker, original 2003 Mustang brochure, original 2003 COBRA brochure, Dealer Maintenance Service Program Booklet and Factory Key Tag from the owner in Burlington, Ontario.  Original parts are also included:  air Intake, factory shifter, factory engine pulleys/belt and Ford Cat Back.
