1972 Ford Mustang Convertible

Here is a 1972 Ford Mustang Convertible which was in the hands of the original owner until the seller purchased this Pony car within the past year. At the time of the seller’s purchase, the car was in the nice cosmetic condition presented today and he put his licensed technician’s skills to work to upgrade it mechanically, getting it to Ontario Safety standard in the process. This late first-generation Mustang (the Mustang II came to market for the 1974 model year) is powered by its original 302 cubic-inch V8 engine mated to the original FMX Select-Shift 3-speed automatic transmission. It wears its original Medium Goldenrod, one of 164 in 1972 in this shade, and the owner notes past paint work on the hood, rear quarters and trunk lid. The Goldenrod is presented over a contrasting interior highlighted by Ginger Knit vinyl. There is a Marti Report in our gallery to trace original specifications, showing that the car was originally delivered by Mohawk Ford in Hamilton, On.

Additional equipment on hand in this ’72 Mustang includes power steering, power brakes with discs up front, the original Philco AM radio, a black power top with glass back light and body side tape stripes. In the hands of the current mechanic owner, brakes have been changed: front pads and rotors and in the rear, shoes, wheel cylinders, brake drums, new lines and hardware kit. Hercules brand whitewall tires at all four corners are 215/70 and mounted on 14” steel wheels covered by Ford Motor Company caps. The tires were installed by the previous owner and are date-coded 2011. Leaf springs and exhaust components have also been installed by the owner. For Ontario bidders, based on the recent safety, recent maintenance and low mileage in his custodianship, the owner believes this Mustang will pass Ontario Safety as it is presented.

There is a black front spoiler in place below the painted bumper. Stripes are in the Mach 1 style and the original Mustang emblems remain, we note a separation of the “G” in the Mustang script on the passenger’s side fender though it is still intact. The black soft top is photographed up close in the gallery and it is complemented by an interior-matched parade boot, also photographed – though there are also photos with it not in place.

The Ginger Knit interior retains good colour and is complemented by a factory Decor Group. There are colour-keyed racing mirrors mounted on the outside of each door. The five-digit odometer reads under 28,000 miles, though total mileage is unknown (TMU).

The 302 cubic-inch V8 drives the rear wheels via the 3-speed Select Shift automatic. A two-barrel carburetor set-up was installed at the factory in Dearborn, Michigan and remains in place. The engine exhales via a single exhaust on the passenger’s side, which can be heard up close in our start-up, engine idle and exhaust video, below. There is also an extensive video of the underside, among others.
