62K-mile 1990 Alfa Romeo Spider Quadrifoglio Series 3 Convertible 5-Speed Manual

Here is a 1990 Alfa Romeo Spider Quadrifoglio Series 3 Convertible 5-Speed Manual.  A US-market car, it was imported into Canada in 2000 and shows under 62,000 miles, making it a sub-100K km car.  It also comes with a clean Carfax.  It is finished in a brilliant silver over red-stitched grey leather seats and blood red carpets.  This interior combination is specific to the Quadrifoglio trim, translated from Italian to four-leaf clover, examples of which are seen on fender emblems and another on the rear spoiler.  The car’s designer, storied Italian design house Pininfarina, is credited via emblems on the rear quarter panels.  The car’s powerplant is a twin cam 2.0 litre inline four powering the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission with a limited-slip differential.

The Pininfarina-designed bodywork is finished in Brilliant Silver, “Argento met, AR 767”, it sits below a black convertible soft top, complemented by a front air dam, body-coloured ground effects, power side mirrors and a rear spoiler adorned in badging.  There are paint chips showing red underneath the panel covering the cowl – seller posits that only this panel has been replaced, believing the car otherwise wears original paint, and the vinyl rear window of the soft top has a slit on the driver’s side.  One of the fog lights is currently not functional.  The previous owner reported a slight leak in the passenger door, though the current owner has not experienced this given that he has not driven the car in rain.  He also relays that in his custodianship, the car has always been stored in a heated indoor garage.  Various exterior scuffs and imperfections are illustrated in the gallery.

The OEM 15″ x 6” 12-hole light alloy wheels are skinned in H-speed rated Michelin MXV4 XSE radials measuring 195/60 at all four corners and pre-dating the current ownership.  Tread is good, as shown in the gallery, though owner mentions that he has noticed cracking.  Four-wheel disc braking is power assisted at each corner.  In addition to general maintenance during his ownership, the seller passes on that the clutch cylinder and battery were replaced in May 2024.  The invoice for this work is included in the gallery.

Inside, there are bucket seats trimmed in Slate Gray leather trimmed in red stitching.  As seen in the gallery, there has been separation of thread while the leather has a cut covered by tape and an exposed perforation on the passenger seat back.  Amenities include a Panasonic AM/FM/CD head unit, power windows, vent windows, an air conditioner not tested/assumed non-functional and a digital clock.  Various interior imperfections are illustrated in the gallery.

There is a three-spoke steering wheel adorned in the Alfa Romeo logo fronting the instrument pod.  Speedometer maxes out at 140 MPH / 220 km/h and there is an 8000 RPM tachometer with 6300 RPM red line, the latter currently non-functional.  The Jaeger instrumentation also includes gauges for oil pressure, voltage, fuel level and coolant temperature.  The six-digit odometer reads just under 62,000 miles.  Owner reports engine oil and differential oil seepage and occasional engine light illumination.

The 2.0-litre DOHC inline-four features Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection.  The 2L was factory rated at 120 horsepower at 5800 RPM and 117 lb.-ft. of torque (2700 RPM).  Please see our video of the engine running.  An on/off switch has been installed on this car for convenience in times of extended storage.  The owner reports that the synchro’s of the car sometimes require double-clutching or a shift into second gear before starting in first.
