2024 – A Look Back

1995 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

Coming into 2024, our high mark sale was ironically also the highest-mileage car we had sold. It was a 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe with 422,000 km on the clock, having sold for $68,000. In 2024, we sold these three “big dogs” to eclipse the high-mile Porsche’s mark:

1991 Ferrari 348 tb 5-Speed Gated Manual
1996 Acura NSX-T 5-Speed Manual

These German, Japanese and Italian offerings also reflected a good mix of how we sell cars. The Porsche was highly sought after, with bids by three different users getting into six-figure territory. So, it made reserve well in advance of the auction clock expiring and, from our chair, was actually a little less adrenaline-pumping than a lot of our auctions because we knew it was going to sell. Reserve prices are a secret, of course, and we heard from several users about how exciting it was for them to follow right until the end. Neither the Acura nor the Ferrari sold by auction – the NSX was sold within an hour or two of the expiry of its auction clock while the Rosso Corsa 348tb sold for the reserve price a couple of weeks after the auction ended. Sellers were happy in each case!  As were the buyers, all of whom we also communicated with post-sale.

1981 DeLorean DMC-12

While we are drawing attention to the higher value items, we did well with more modestly valued cars. The highest volume marque sold in 2024 was a tie between Porsche and Mercedes-Benz. These were followed closely by Corvettes and Mustangs – all in all, a good reflection of Canadian market preferences with other Brits, Germans, Swedes, Italians, Japanese and domestics sprinkled in – see the photos below of some of the others sold this year. Even a DeLorean!

Outside of sales, we launched our two podcasts in 2024, the Car Reviews and the Collector Car Stories podcasts. We have had a video review of every car available on our site since May. These have proven a valuable resource in our efforts to get our sellers’ cars sold and where practical our own Chief Enthusiast, Founder Dave, attended the car’s location and recorded the video to demo the car.

Collector Car Canada Collector Car Stories Podcast

The Collector Car Stories podcast has also proved a worthy addition, where we speak to fellow enthusiasts and share their car stories. All episodes of both are available on the site and we’d encourage you to catch up on any back instalments you may have missed. WARNING: you might find them a lot of fun.  Catch them here!

Collector Car Canada Cars n' Coffee event, Nov. 9, 2024

We also successfully held monthly Cars n’ Coffee events May through October… errr… November. The original plan was for the event held October 6 to the final one for 2024 but central Canada enjoyed beautiful fall weather and we pulled one off November 9, which was a huge hit. Most such events had ended weeks prior so the response to this one was fantastic among those still trying to enjoy their hobby cars with nowhere to go! We also attended more than our fair share of cruise nights, annual events, club happenings, speaking engagements and annual shows, as in prior years – you’ll see many of these sprinkled in to the website’s “What We’ve Seen” section. We have some big ideas for 2025 – stay tuned! (Photo by Eshel Zweig.)

We embarked upon a couple of other new initiatives for 2024 with sales support in mind. We now offer mobile pre-purchase inspections to help arm buyers with more information in advance of an auction bid or Buy-It-Now commitment – in most cases, these were commissioned by sellers understanding their importance but potential bidders sought them out as well. We also now offer financing on certain of our available cars.

What is in store for 2025?

Well, we don’t plan to change much – when you have a good thing going, you keep it going, improving it along the way. We are aiming to keep auctions going through the winter months, sellers willing, before more of us are thinking about driving for pleasure and our precious rides come spring. One thing you will notice is that all cars for which we perceive value at $10,000 or less will be No Reserve. In other words, we won’t be accepting reserves for cars worth under $10,000 – more No Reserve auctions will add to the excitement of the site. We also believe it will spur bidding because we believe bidders are more likely to bid if they know something is going to sell. No change to being able to see the cars while they are available. This is something that we have made available to you since Day 1 – use the Contact Seller button appearing on live auctions and go check it out, we encourage it and so do sellers!

Got a car to sell? We are accepting online submissions, do that here!  (Take advantage of our 2024 promotion – NO listing fee.)
